Laurel forest, known as laurissilva, once covered the islands. Over centuries the laurel forests were mostly cleared.

The best way to get there is by car, as public transport is not an option, or by booking private transportation . Renting a Car in Madeira is one of the best ways to get to Fanal. If driving, take ER209 and follow the Fanal signs.
